What is a safety management system and what are the benefits?

Safety Management Systems (SMS) are a coordinated and systematic approach to managing health and safety risks. A SMS drives organisations to continually improve their safety performance and compliance to health and safety legislation and standards. This approach meets the general requirements of health and safety legislation AS/NZS 4801 and OHSAS 18001 and has been adopted widely across all industry sectors.

The Benefits of having a Safety management system

Australian Research has shown that incorporating safety management systems into normal business operations reduces accidents and improves safety in high-risk industries by:

  • Assisting organisations to create a safer workplace
  • Reducing injuries and injury-related costs– by identifying work practices that have the potential to cause work related injuries. Employers will save money on medical expenses, the injured employee’s wages and increased workers compensation costs
  • Improving business opportunities by demonstrating compliance with Health Safety Legislation and demonstrating safe systems of work thus enhancing the organisations reputation.
  • Using predetermined objectives with set targets that are measurable which will verify health and safety performance.

ASI Safety has undertaken a range of health and safety and integrated SMS Audits across a range of industries. These include mining, manufacturing, building construction and transport and logistics as well as in government. We understand the barriers and drivers to improve performance and how to effectively work and support managers, supervisors, health and safety representatives/committees and safety officers/specialists.

Safety Management System Auditing

ASI Safety can provide you with a qualified, experienced and accredited Safety Auditor or Auditing Team to assist you to meet accreditation requirements. These may include auditing against a recognised health and safety audit standard such as AS/NZS 4801, OHSAS 18001 Self Insurers or Government Safety requirements (e.g Safety in the Public Sector).

As an alternative, our consultants can assist your organisation to develop or improve your existing health and safety audit tools and processes, a specific safety program or to “transfer skills” to your internal audit team.

ASI Safety consultants are highly trained, experienced and independently recognised / accredited auditors.
